PROJECT PROFILE

KBL (previously SECURE Energy) was awarded a contract of perform the installation of final cap materials over a portion of the North Slope at the Nanaimo Regional Landfill identified including anchor trench construction and existing road refurbishment; landfill gas collection piping decommissioning, salvage, and reinstatement; supply and installation of various material for leachate collection, geotextile cushions, and landfill final cover system amongst other scope elements.

PROJECT CHALLENGES

KBL successfully completed the full scope of work associated with the closure and capping of the landfill site, in strict accordance with the RDN’s staged construction sequencing and regulatory requirements. The project encompassed environmental protection measures, final waste grading, gas and leachate collection system installations, and the construction of a multi-layer engineered final cover system.

Additional site civil works included the installation of liner boots at existing manholes and pipe penetrations, construction of mid-slope and toe drainage ditches, and installation of downchute systems. A sanitary sewer clean-out extension was also supplied and installed to maintain access for maintenance activities.

The work included:

  • Trenching and installation of 2000 LM of landfill gas and condensate piping
  • Trenching and installation of 226 LM of leachate collection piping
