Sustainable Soil Solutions
KBL’s Soil Treatment Facilities (STFs) are purpose-built to accept and treat contaminated soils across Northern and Western Canada. Our facilities are fully engineered and permitted, ensuring that all operations meet stringent regulatory requirements and protect surrounding environments from potential impacts.
By treating soils locally, we provide communities and industries with convenient and cost-effective alternatives to long-haul disposal or landfilling. This reduces transportation costs, lowers greenhouse gas emissions, and supports a circular economy by enabling beneficial reuse of treated soils as cover material or for other approved applications. Facilities are generally located adjacent to municipal solid waste landfills so that treated soils can be re-used as cover material for low density municipal solid waste.
A formal profiling process is completed including chemical analysis and review by technical staff to understand levels of contamination and ensure that treatment can be achieved. Prior to the acceptance of soil and/or snow/water at the STFs, KBL’s water license requires the completion and submission of a waste profile form and laboratory analytical results. What We Accept
Our STFs are equipped to manage a wide range of impacted materials, including:
- Hydrocarbon-contaminated soils (gasoline, diesel, heating oil)
- Metals-contaminated soils
- Coal tar, perchloroethylene, and chlorophenols
- Other jurisdictionally approved waste streams
Benefits of Using Our STFs
- Environmental protection through engineered containment and treatment systems
- Beneficial reuse of treated soils, reducing reliance on raw materials
- Local solutions for northern and remote communities, keeping resources in-region
- Cost savings through reduced transportation and disposal fees
- Expert oversight with full profiling, chemical analysis, and regulatory compliance checks completed on every project.
