PROJECT PROFILE
Cenovus Energy required the decommissioning of their Asphalt Terminal at Watson Lake, YT. Our company was appointed for its vast experience in industrial and residential demolition throughout Western Canada and extensive knowledge of specialty structure demolition. Our company owns a vast array of demolition equipment, making it the leading demolition contractor in Western and Northern Canada.
SCOPE OF WORK
- Provide an inventory of the hazardous materials stored on-site, including HazMat assessment and abatement.
- HazMat separation, segregation, containment, loading, hauling and disposal. The waste materials were contained in totes, pails, drums, and super sacks.
- Demolished aboveground structures, including ASTs, office trailers, milltrailers, process units, etc.
- Break and remove concrete containment.
- Removed steel piles supporting the structures.
- Processed, hauled, and recycled scrap metal to a metal recycling facility.
- Disposed of non-regulated industrial waste including emulsified asphalt.
- Demolished concrete and sent to the local recycling yard
PROJECT CHALLENGES
From start to end, we had to solve several challenges, by opening a clean communication channel to the project stakeholders and by working with the client diligently
- Establishing the permit from the Town of Watson Lake, as well as the YT WCB clearance, took a bit more time than usual.
- Due to the limited availability of specialized vendors, suppliers, and recycling facilities in town, planning thoroughly for all the services and supplies upfront to make sure the efficiency of the project is not compromised.
- Inter-provincial waste hauling and disposal was another challenge that required working with the governing bodies and disposal facilities to make sure all the processes and approvals were in place.
PROJECT SUCCESS
Consideration was given during planning to account for early winter weather, and the limited access with only one highway to travel in and out of Watson Lake. Our pre-planning allowed for the successful execution of this project.
By utilizing internal resources, including trucking and disposal facilities, we were able to achieve significant cost savings at the end of the project.
