Giant Mine Remediation Project: Continuing a Multi-Year ESG Commitment

Giant Mine remains one of Canada’s most complex legacy remediation projects and continues to be a defining example of KBL’s ESG principles in action. In 2025, KBL, through True North Environmental Ltd. — an incorporated joint venture between Det’on Cho Corporation and KBL Corporation — advanced its role at the site through the Core Industrial Area abatement, demolition, and debris removal program. The project was awarded under the federal Procurement Strategy for Indigenous Business and is scheduled to run from November 2024 through October 2026.

The 2025 scope builds on prior work at Giant Mine by addressing highly complex legacy infrastructure within the Core Industrial Area. Activities include structural stability assessments, hazardous materials abatement, decontamination of structures, demolition of select buildings and utilities, and the characterization, segregation, and disposal of hazardous, non-hazardous, legacy, and operational wastes. This work supports the broader Giant Mine Remediation Project objective of protecting the public, workers, the environment, and site infrastructure while maintaining regulatory compliance.

Because of the site’s historic arsenic, asbestos, cyanide, and other hazardous-material risks, the project is governed by detailed safety, health, and environmental protection controls. TNE’s approach includes hazardous material identification and removal, controlled deconstruction, dust suppression, wastewater and dust management, air quality monitoring, medical monitoring, and strict waste handling procedures. These controls demonstrate how KBL integrates environmental stewardship, worker protection, regulatory compliance, and Indigenous partnership into the delivery of complex remediation work in the North.
