PROJECT PROFILE
The City of Edmonton partnered with Capital Power to issue an RFP for the supply, construction, installation, and commissioning of a landfill gas and leachate management system at the Clover Bar Class II Landfill. The system was to replace their existing aging system in anticipation of a new blower/flare station to be constructed in the future. KBL was selected through an evaluated response process based on our extensive expertise in the landfill gas industry.
SCOPE OF WORK
The Project included the procurement and installation of an extensive landfill gas and leachate collection infrastructure consisting of over 25.0 km of HDPE Piping ranging in sizes from 50mm to 350mm. The work additionally included the drilling of 41 – 600mm dual-purpose extraction wells and 61 – 450mm extraction wells, which combined for over 2,470m of vertical drilling. A significant labour force was required to connect the 102 wellheads, 21 flow control valves, 7 pump drain traps, 41 pneumatic leachate pumps, leachate chamber, and full site commissioning and testing.
PROJECT CHALLENGES
The large diameter (600mm) dual extraction wells presented a major challenge due to their extreme depths (up to 53m) and challenging sub-surface conditions. Upon completion, KBL successfully installed what are believed to be some of the deepest landfill gas/leachate extraction wells in Canada.
PROJECT SUCCESS
The project was completed to the satisfaction of the client. In many cases, the existing landfill cap was left in a much better condition than at the start of the project, with significant regrading performed during restoration efforts. On-site environmental sensitivities were also successfully managed with an active bald eagle nesting location within 250m of aspects of the work.
