Sulphur recovery and vessel-loading support | Newfoundland and Labrador

Working with Seablinc, KBL helped repurpose approximately 7,000 metric tonnes of stockpiled sulphur at the Come By Chance refinery, connecting material assessment with on-site handling and vessel-loading support for the South American market.

The challenge

Approximately 10,632 metric tonnes of solid sulphur had accumulated in stockpiles of varying purity at the refinery, managed by North Atlantic Refining Limited (NARL).

Creating a recovery opportunity required an understanding of the material’s quality and quantity, followed by a coordinated plan to move selected sulphur from the refinery yard to the dock. Port availability, Newfoundland and Labrador’s weather, and tidal conditions shaped the available loading window.

Our approach

KBL mobilized the supervision and management and engaged with local vendor support to execute the project on-site from stockpile assessment through dockyard cleanup.

Our scope included:

  • Sampling, analysis and categorization against sulphur purity specifications.
  • Stockpile surveying to establish quantities.
  • Excavation and transport from the refinery yard to the dockyard.
  • Dockside stockpile management to support the vessel crane’s loading cycle.
  • Coordination of local pressure washing and residual-sulphur removal after loading.

KBL, Seablinc, NARL and the vessel crew coordinated activities around the port schedule and favourable weather windows. Our team worked across day and night shifts, completing the transfer and loading support within the available window.

The outcome

Through the KBL and Seablinc partnership, approximately 7,000 metric tonnes of sulphur previously considered waste were repurposed and marketed for greater value, substantially reducing the inventory remaining on-site.

Following loading, a local vendor pressure washed the dockyard and removed residual sulphur to restore the area to its previous condition. The project also extended KBL’s sulphur execution experience into Eastern Canada and established local vendor relationships to support future work in the region.

Connecting material knowledge with field execution

The Come By Chance project demonstrates how material assessment, a receiving market and coordinated field execution can create a practical recovery route for stored sulphur.
