PROJECT PROFILE
Our Company was selected in late 2021 to recommission and operate a remelt facility at the Shantz Sulphur Forming Facility. Our long history of successful sulphur remelts (including 2 previous remelt projects at the Shantz facility melting over 600,000 tonnes) made our company the logical choice with a proven track record on safety and efficiency in sulphur projects. The scope of work included recommissioning of a decommissioned sulphur remelt system (sulphur pit, boiler, steam system, conveyors, and ancillary equipment), and operation of the remelt pit and steam system. The operations scope involved taking crushed bulk sulphur delivered via truck from an oilsands producer and remelting it before pumping to the Shantz facility for forming. Daily production volumes are 300-1000 tonnes of sulphur per day.
SCOPE OF WORK
We re-assembled recommissioned the remelt pit, boiler, and steam system to begin remelting a large stockpile of material that had been delivered to the site. Multiple challenges were encountered due to the length of time the equipment had been left in a decommissioned state and many repairs were required to get the system operational.
Once functional, our company worked through operational challenges with both the remelt equipment design, and the facility requirements, to get production up to the desired purity levels and daily remelt volumes. Due to the sulphur forming technology utilized at Shantz, sulphur purity coming from remelt needed to be filtered to a 150 micron spec. This challenge was critical to the success of the project and required operational adjustments to maintain high levels of purity without sacrificing production volumes.
PROJECT SUCCESS
The Shantz Sulphur remelt is ongoing with daily production continuing to improve and is approaching 1,000 tonnes remelted per day.
