PROJECT PROFILE
The Client owns and operates the Industrial Landfill near Colgate SK. The project consisted of regrading the entire landfill footprint and constructing a permanent earth cover on three sides of the landfill. On the fourth side of the landfill, an interim Geosynthetic cap was installed, decommissioning of some site infrastructure was also part of the scope of the work. KBL was invited to bid on the project based on our previous experience and reputation working with owner and consultant.
SCOPE OF WORK
This site, in particular, is prone to high winds, and as a result, created concerns for several days during deployment and the previously installed liner when the wind gusts were in excess of 90 km/hr. KBL worked with the Geosynthetic Sub-Contractor to secure the liner in the anchor trench in efforts of maintaining the progress that was made leading up to the high-wind days.
Stormwater pond stripping presented a challenge due to the material being heavily saturated and unusable to reuse as part of cover layers. The crew modified execution efforts by creating a series of berms between the excavation and the pond to continue advancing in a series-like manner.
Acombinationof clay from twoseparate borrowlocationswererequireddue to volume of material available at the site. One stockpile was very dry and required moisture conditioning and the second stockpile was above optimum moisture condition. The blended clay barrier layer was constructed by carefully sequencing the water truck and then loading, hauling, placing and compacting material to create layer meeting specification.
PROJECT CHALLENGES
KBL relocated 19,000m3 of waste soil and graded 66,000m2 to create subgrade for the earthen cap structure. An interim 44,000m2 Geosynthetic Cap was installed which included a wind defender layer. Some site infrastructure was decommissioned, and areas reclaimed. All areas had topsoil placed and a drill seed application was completed. The Client expectations were meet with the level our quality, safety, and communication.
