In collaboration with The City of Calgary and SYLVIS Environmental Services, KBL participated in a groundbreaking initiative focused on the beneficial reuse of stormwater pond sediment — transforming a historically landfilled waste stream into a valuable environmental resource.
Stormwater management ponds play a critical role in protecting urban waterways by capturing runoff, sediments, and pollutants before water is discharged into natural systems. Over time, accumulated sediment must be removed to maintain pond capacity and operational effectiveness. Traditionally, this dredged material has been treated as waste and transported to landfill facilities. Through this collaborative project, KBL helped demonstrate a more sustainable alternative.
Working alongside project partners, KBL supported the development and evaluation of manufactured soil blends using dewatered stormwater pond sediment combined with compost, sand, and organic amendments. The project assessed technical feasibility, environmental performance, and regulatory compliance under Alberta’s environmental framework. Testing confirmed the sediment met Alberta Tier 1 guidelines for residential and parkland land use applications, enabling its use in beneficial soil manufacturing applications.
In 2024, The City of Calgary received regulatory authorization to proceed with a demonstration application project using fabricated topsoil produced from reclaimed sediment. Approximately 500 cubic metres of manufactured soil were applied across a three-hectare site to improve soil productivity and vegetation establishment. Monitoring results confirmed the project successfully enhanced soil quality while reducing landfill dependency and supporting long-term environmental stewardship.
This initiative highlights the value of collaboration, innovation, and practical environmental problem-solving. By helping divert sediment from landfill and repurpose it into a usable soil product, the project demonstrates how municipalities and industry can work together to reduce waste, lower greenhouse gas emissions associated with hauling and disposal, and conserve natural resources.
