PROJECT PROFILE
The 10 sites included in this project were orphaned sites that the Orphan Well Association is in the process of decommissioning and reclaiming. Orphaned sites present difficulties due to a lack of information in some cases. This means that all work must be completed with the expectation of encountering unknown conditions. KBL was selected for this work thanks to a combination of competitive pricing and a large amount of experience completing demolitions of similar size and scope.
SCOPE OF WORK
The scope of work included the abatement and complete demolition of all above and below-ground facilities on site. This includes the demolition of all buildings, equipment, vessels, pipelines and underground tanks on site. All piles and underground infrastructure were removed to at least 2.5m below grade as well. All the materials were hauled off-site and disposed of or recycled. Throughout the project, KBL worked with other 3rd party owners on the project as many of the sites had operating pipelines coming into the site that had to be worked around.
PROJECT CHALLENGES
Several of the sites were sour gas sites which require special care and attention when decommissioning. KBL used supplied air trailers to open all the equipment, vessels and piping and checked for H2S gas prior to beginning any other work. All the sites were safely demolished once H2S was confirmed to not be present or once it was cleaned and removed from the system.
KBL completed most of the work in the winter. Winter conditions can cause issues with heavy equipment and can reduce productivity. KBL was able to complete this work ahead of the OWA schedule despite the winter conditions encountered.
PROJECT SUCCESS
KBL completed the on-site work one month earlier than required which allowed additional time to complete all QAQC that the client needed for their year-end reporting. Overall, the client was very pleased with the outcome of the project. KBL recycled 1,285 MT of scrap metal from this project.
PROJECT RELEVANCE
This project consisted of the demolition of 10 medium sized oil and gas facilities. These facilities were spread out over central Alberta and required two crews working in tandem to complete the work on schedule.
