PROJECT PROFILE
Our company has performed sulphur block pouring services at the CNRL Horizon Facility since facility commissioning, along with deblocking of over 1 million tonnes of sulphur for various clients throughout Alberta over the past 20 years. In early 2021 we were approached to provide de-blocking solutions to allow the recycling of block space for future use while capitalizing on high sulphur demand and positive pricing. The scope of work required a ramp to be constructed to access the block and a loading area to be set up that would ensure dusting and off-site sulphur impacts could be mitigated and controlled.
SCOPE OF WORK
We utilized a specialized long-reach excavator to safely construct an access ramp into the sulphur block to allow the de-blocking excavation to begin. A loading and stockpile area was set up with careful attention to keeping highway trucks separate from sulphur equipment to prevent contamination of roads. Wind screens and a dust suppression water application systems were set up to control fugitive dust emissions from excavation and loading activities.
Once the loading area was completed and all plans, procedures, and mitigations were in place, block excavation and trucking loading commenced in a strategically planned manner.
PROJECT SUCCESS
With careful pre-planning, and through the use of work plans and procedures developed over multiple sulphur projects over the years, our company has provided block excavation and loading services to CNRL.
This project is ongoing, excavating and loading up to 600 tonnes/day with the ability to scale up or down quickly to adapt to changing market conditions. To date, nearly 300,000 tonnes have been excavated and loaded safely, efficiently, and without impact on surrounding areas
